The most popular legend attributes the creation of the marquise cut to King Louis XV, who commissioned a jeweler to create a stone that mirrored the "perfectly shaped lips" of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. The cut was named marquise in honor of her noble title. Soon after its creation, courtiers wore marquise shaped jewels to demonstrate their high rank, strengthening the cut's association with royalty and status.
